Please take the time to read a little bit about us...

On behalf of the Steward Family we sincerely hope your stay in Kauai is enhanced by the beautiful surroundings and comfort of our beloved home.

Hale Steward, modeled after the original plantation style architecture of the Waioli Mission, was built in 1990 by Harry and Kathleen Steward.

Harry and Kathleen, albacore fisherman by trade, were longtime residents of Hawaii, especially Harry who became enamored with the Islands during his coast guard and navy service in the early fifties. And later were apart of a tradition that comes to Kauai every two years after sailing the Transpac Race.

(San Pedro, California to Diamond Head, Hawaii). (Now everybody winds up in Hanalei after the Transpac)

In 1969 he won second over all and first in his class aboard a Cal 48 named 'JUBILATION'.

Harry Steward raced the Transpac 1963, 1965, aboard a Cal 42 named 'TYBOON'

And 1967, 1969 aboard 'JUBILATION'.

1970 Tahiti-race (Los angeles to Papeete) aboard 'JUBILAION' bringing along his family to Tahiti, where we had numerous races between the islands.

Their first home in Kauai was built virtually ON the beach in Haena (past Hanalei and Wainiha down towards the 'end of the road').

After a time they grew tired of the constant flow of tourists, relentless winds and pounding surf of the beach and sought out the peace and tranquility of the Kalihiwai Valley. They also hoped that moving inland and up from the sea that they could escape the threat of Tsunamis (Big waves!), hurricanes and floods which had historically taken a toll in the beach area.

Ironically enough, two years later in 1992 Hurricane Iniki struck Kauai, and Hale Steward had its roof blown off, exposing the entire contents of the house - or what was left of them - to the elements (nonstop torrential rains) until a makeshift roof could be fashioned by local neighbors and friends (see photo). That's why if you look closely, you can still see the traces of water damage to the walls, artwork and furniture. This is all part of Hale Stewards charming uniqueness!
